What are Common Standardized Field Sobriety Tests (FST)?

The the common field sobriety tests described herein areintended togive you anidea of the types of tests the police will conduct in the feied to make a preliminary determination if a driver suspected of driving under the influence is actually driving under the influence. If you have any further questions or concerns, please feel free to contact an attorney in our Orange County office for a consultation with an experienced DUI lawyer.

Some Common Standardized Field Sobriety Tests:

Balanced Eyes Closed: In the starting postion, the suspected driver stands with toes and heels together with the arms at the side, and head slightly tiled back with eyes closed is asked to estimate a time frame of 30 seconds and then to stop look forward and to open the suspect's eyes.

Walk & Turn: In this Field Sobriety Test (FST) the suspect is asked to walk an imaginary straight line placing the heel of the foot to the toe of the other foot and asked to walk forward a certain distance and then to do a 3 point turn, and walk forward along the same imagenary line.

One Leg Stand: In the starting postion, the suspected driver stands with toes and heels together with the arms at the side, and hands open, stands erect and raises one foot six to eight inches above the ground and counts to 30. This can be very difficult to properly do if the suspect is under the influence.

Finger to Nose: In the stating position, the suspect generally stands with toes and heels together and arms at the side, with the index finger extended and eyes close is asked to touch the tip of the suspect's nose and place the hand back down at the side. All of these tests can be very difficult to properly do if the suspect is under the influence.
